Lady Seahawks 2008-2009 Season Recap

This past year the Lady Seahawks ended their basketball season as one of the top ten teams in the USCAA women’s basketball conference for a second straight year.

Having been ranked #6 in the country at the end of the previous season, second year head coach Jay Lynch and his Lady Seahawks had visions of a winning it all in 09. With a solid nucleus returning and another top recruiting incoming class, the team broke pre-season and headed down to Lincoln University to play two top level NCAA Division 2 teams. After one initial win and two subsequent losses on the road, the Lady Seahawks entered a nine game winning streak. Attributed to a solid defense, relentless 3 pointers, and some tremendous fast breaks, Briarcliffe’s USCAA composite rankings continued to rise and landed the team a #2 ranking in the country!

During the new year, the Lady Seahawks, undeterred by the challenges of a rigorous road schedule, managed to keep the winning streak alive. Next was a much anticipated USCAA showdown with Penn-State–Brandywine (the 18th ranked team in America) in which Briarcliffe was victorious. A tough loss to Apprentice School was followed by an encouraging 15 point victory over Rutgers-Newark. After a new winning streak, the Seahawks completed their season 14-4 with the highest winning percentage in the College’s history.

Further validation occurred when Briarcliffe was selected as one of only twelve teams by the USCAA to attend the National Championship in PA.

After a few tough defeats the Lady Seahawks returned to Bethpage ranked #10 in the country.

Coach Lynch and his Lady Seahawks finished 15-6 ranked tenth in the country. Leona Virgo was named All-American and Michelle Bauerschmidt named Academic All-American at the USCAA national championship dinner. The Briarcliffe College women’s basketball program has established itself as one of the top programs in the USCAA during the last two years under Coach Jay Lynch’s leadership and will look for further success in the 2009-2010 season!
